By Steve Roberts

You won't tone up your stomach simply by exercise alone. Consider how long it's taken for you to build up that layer of fat around your middle and understand that it is the most difficult area to lose fat from. People focus on abdominal exercises alone which has no effect whatsoever in burning fat.

Until you have removed that layer of fat you won't be able to see your abdominal muscles. So how do we go about removing that layer of fat? A combination of nutrition and exercise. In fact nutrition plays the more important role in burning stomach fat which in turn will allow the exercise to work more effectively to tone up your stomach.

When looking to lose weight and tone up your stomach muscles there are three inter-related necessary steps you need to take :

FIRST:

If you want to tone up your stomach you first need to look at your diet. So to start with ensure you drink lots of water, at least 6-8 glasses a day, instead of fizzy drinks. .

Avoid salty foods high in sodium as these will cause bloating and water retention. Eat foods higher in protein - fish, chicken, beef, pork etc and reduce your carb. intake.

Eat plenty fresh fruit and vegetables. Avoid refined carbs. and choose wholemeal bread, brown rice, wholemeal pasta instead but limit your intake. Do this and after 3-4 weeks you will see a difference in your weight and this alone will slim down your stomach.

SECOND:

In tandem with your healthy eating plan perform cardio exercise three times a week for 30-40 minutes to get the fat burning off. If you are not used to an exercise program then try power walking, jogging, swimming or bicycling these are excellent free methods of exercise that can burn calories.

Increase the intensity and distance covered on each occasion you exercise. Once you see an improvement in your fitness level you can introduce a specific program targeted to involve cardio and resistance exercises which will improve on your fitness and take you to the next level. Remember consistency is the key to burning fat and losing weight.

THIRD:

To get the best results from stomach exercises and tone up your stomach you need to work on three core areas.

The three core areas you need to work on are the Upper Abs, the Lower Abs and the Obliques. By working on all 3 areas you will tone up the whole of your stomach. Remember that each time you work out you should be pushing the muscles harder and working to failure. This will force the muscles to improve their tone. Eventually your stomach will start to show good tone.

Once you can do a few stomach exercises find an exercise program that can be broken down over beginner, intermediate and advanced levels to provide you with highly targeted exercises for the 3 core areas. This will allow you to increase the intensity at a pace that suits you and helps you to push the muscles to their limit.
