So You Wanna Learn to Fight All Them Bullies!

By Al Case

That is probably the number one reason most people get into the martial arts. Everybody has had that bully in their background. Everybody would like to feel bigger, stronger, free from the threat of violence.

Now, if you just want to fight, to be truthful, I recommend going to a boxing club for a few months. You'll learn what it feels like to get hit, you'll get in shape, and you'll learn how to hit back.

If you think there is something more to life than fighting, if you've been to the boxing club and are ready for the next step, then you must look to the martial arts. You must believe that life isn't just a constant and odious struggle for survival for the fittest, but that there is a point to the whole thing. You must believe in yourself as a human being, and you must believe that you can actually transcend to higher levels of awareness.

First you must build a structure for containing the knowledge in the martial arts. This is why you do forms; this is something that boxing does not have. This is the mechanism which will elevate you.

Second, you must achieve discipline in your life. I don't mean the discipline where you get a belt on the bottom as punishment for doing wrong. I mean the discipline of doing something every day for the simple reason that you love doing it.

Third, you must study a system that has a logic and common sense within it. The reason for this is one of practicality and expedience. You don't want to spend your life sorting through fourteen varieties of silliness and chants. You want to get to the top of the mountain while you are still young enough to appreciate it.

Fourth, you must not stop doing the art for a single day, you must learn to make every waking moment of your life an artful endeavor. Drill those basics patiently and constantly, open your eyes and learn to perceive the actualities of what you are doing. You must not just work out in the physical sense of pumping the body for a sweat, you must invest your awareness into your art and make it glow.

The fact of art, you see, is a manifestation of your true worth as a human spirit. It is your awareness filtered through the layers of your logic and shining like a light bulb for all to see. Life can truly be a paradaisical experience, you know, but only if you learn how to isolate the art within your soul and turn it on bright and loud. - 29951
