Five Questions and Answers on Fat Loss and Weight Lifting

By Grace Soong

Will my muscles turn to fat if I stop working out?

Never. Muscle never converts to fat, and vice versa. Fat is your bodys fuel reserve. Muscle uses fuel to function . When your food intake is less than what your muscles need to function, your body uses its fuel reserves-your body fat. When you stop working out you decrease the use of your muscles. If you do not decrease your food intake, you will store the extra fuel in the form of fat.

What is better: jogging or walking?

Aerobic exercise serves one purpose, and that is to increase heart and breathing rate. The type of exercise that you do, whether it is walking or jogging is irrelevant, provided that the exercise you choose increases both heart and breathing rates. Do not make the mistake of working too hard (which can lead to injury and burnout) or not working hard enough.

Am I too old to start a strength-training program?

No. Whether you are starting your first exercise program or getting back into fitness after a long break, the first step is to tune in to your body. Inactive people often are not in touch with how their body feels, what it can and cannot do. Start slowly, especially if you have gained weight over the years or developed arthritis in your joints.

If I lift heavy weights, will I get too bulky?

Unless you ingest steroids, you have nothing to worry about. Most women and men will not add on more than a few pounds of muscle unless they take extreme measures. You are more likely to tone up and sculpt your body without bulking up like a body builder.

Is it better to do cardio before or after lifting weights?

Consider these: 1-- The intensity of both your cardio and weight training routines, 2-- motivation - what do you to want to get out of the way? 3-- level of muscular endurance and stamina, 4-- duration of the cardio vs. volume of weight training, and, 5-- fitness goals: What do you want to improve? How you answer these questions will determine your best order for cardio and weight training. - 29951
