How To Minimize The Damage Of Drastic Dieting

By Katherine Crawford M.S.

As much as I am against crash diets, I understand that some people are going to do them regardless of the consequences. So I have decided to provide some tips on how to crash diet while minimizing the negatives.

Why is crash dieting so bad for you? I would say the biggest drawback is the rebound weight gain that can happen afterwards. This rebound usually leaves the crash dieter heavier than before.

So here is how to minimize the damage of drastic dieting:

1. Learn how to stop. You cannot just stop cold turkey here. A slow phasing out of the diet is your best option. If you simply stop the diet and start eating the way you used to, you will gain a lot of weight very quickly.

2. Supplement. You will have to supplement your diet with a high quality multivitamin. Do your research and buy the best one you can get.

3. Do your most important work when you are most alert. Because of circadian rhythm alerting, there are two times during the day when your levels of alertness peak. Identify these times and do your most important work when alertness is at its highest.

4. Use distraction when the hunger strikes. Go to the mall, do some gardening, watch a movie, etc. Anything that gets your mind off of the hunger. Some top wrestlers usually play video games to get their minds off of the extreme pre-competition dieting.

5. Expect the regain. You will gain some weight once you stop dieting. There is no way around this. So do not get discouraged when it happens.

6. Short term use only. Sticking to a drastic diet long term is a metabolic death wish. You can seriously alter your metabolism in a very negative way. So make sure you use a drastic diet sparingly for short bursts ONLY.

Following a drastic diet is NOT good for you and can have some pretty nasty consequences. The saddest thing is when someone ends up heavier than before the diet. So please follow the advice in this article if you decide to take the risk! - 29951
